Read The Label, Lick The Spoon

I'm sure if I told you to jump off a bridge because it was fun, you'd think twice about doing it, right? I mean, I'm sure you'd look over the bridge, to make you'd be landing in some deep ocean water, hopefully free of sharks, rather than into oncoming traffic on a busy highway. And even then, you'd probably still question me.

As a mom, I'm always trying to make the right decision for my children. I'm a pretty laid-back mom, and despite the fact that I worry non-stop and am constantly on my toes waiting for a disaster to strike, I'm relaxed about the snacks my boys eat, as long as I know they're generally eating well-balanced meals. And they are. I am lucky to have family look after my boys when I'm at work, and since we're Greek, it's almost a given they'll be eating extremely healthy every day. We basically follow the Mediterrenean diet, which is full of food that is good for you. The snack of choice for my boys? Greek salad.

Of course, my boys like to indulge from time to time, and there is no food that is not allowed in my house. They have chocolate, in small amounts, when the cravings hit. And Nutella, of course. I mean, how could they NOT love Nutella? You get what I'm saying, right? It's damn good! And psst... it's not all that bad for you. I'd rather my children have a Nutella and banana sandwich instead of frozen chicken nuggets!

The makers of Nutella recently settled two class-action lawsuits which were filed by consumers who said they were deceived by the brand's advertising. The settlement? $3 million dollars.

I don't understand how the company was successfully sued, when all the nutritional information is right on the jar, listed for everyone to see. Did the people who sued Nutella not read the Nutrition Facts before feeding it to their children? Also, what chocolate fairy unicorn island do these people live on, where they thought that a chocolate spread was totally HEALTHY, anyway, despite what the ads said? Sugar is the first listed ingredient. Which is why my children don't eat Nutella every day. I believe in being accountable, and from the commercials I've seen, I don't see where they were wrong.

This ad for Nutella, in my opinion, is not misleading.

I also don't get people who sue McDonald's because, ohmyGod they gained weight and how is that possible, just because they were eating seven Big Mac combos a day? I mean, the nerve, McDonald's, the nerve!

Personally, I think Nutella on two slices of 12 grain bread with some fruit and a glass of skin milk is not a bad breakfast, no worse than some cereals out there. Better than no breakfast, at all. Nutella is not always in my house, but when I do buy a jar, my children are happy, and so am I. We eat it occasionally. Of course, right now, all I'm craving is a crepe with nutella and strawberries and ice cream.

I've bought hair products that claim they'll make my hair more shiny and strong, and hair products that claim they'll totally get rid of the frizz. Time and time again, I have been disappointed in the results, because often, my hair doesn't look like it did in the commercial. Despite this, I don't sue or blame anyone, or get angry. I might switch brands, but that's as far as I'll go.

I buy orange juice after seeing ads on TV that claim the juice will taste as good as sticking a straw in an orange, and sometimes, that's not true. I don't sue. Or get mad.

I have used Bio Oil to get rid of a couple of minor scars, but hmm, they're still there. I did not get mad or sue because of this, either.

I could give dozens of other examples about how ads can be misleading, but long story short, I love Nutella.

Advertising wasn't my major in university, but I did take a few courses. I'm not completley clueless when I see ads, and while I expect honesty in what companies and brands are selling to me, I know I should do my own research before deciding on what products to consume. I always knew I'd never look like Cindy Crawford drinking a Diet Pepsi, but it's still my drink of choice.

Oh, and Red Bull never gave me wings, either. That's why I'm not actually going to jump off that bridge, after all.

They have to overturn that ruling! How ridiculous. Nutella is delicious because it's chocolate!! That said, I wish I had sued them.

Well said!!! I absolutely love Nutella! I grew up eating it and I give to my kids, too. They don't eat Nutella on a daily basis and they are not fat since we also follow the very healthy Mediterranean diet. Why this diet?...Because we're GREEKS!!! Yia sou, patriotisa!

Well said. We always have a jar of Nutella in our house. It`s a comfort food from when I was a kid. No we don`t eat it every day and even when we do it`s part of a balanced diet. Nutella is good and that judge needs to rethink his decision.

As Gump would say `Stupid is and stupid does`

What ever happened to being accountable for the choices we make in life? I just can't believe people sometimes. At all. Common sense seems to be hard to find anymore. Sheesh.

Thank you!!! This is exactly how I feel. It's all about taking ownership for your decisions. Our family loves Nutella. We don't eat it everyday. We in no way believe that it is as nutritious as a cup of brocoli, yet we enjoy it for what it is...a yummy chocolaty treat that we can enjoy at breakfast. Or by the spoon late at night when there isn't any chocolate handy in the house.
I have to admit, when I saw the commercial for the first time I thought it was pretty crazy of Nutella to plug itself as a HEALTHY breakfast option. What is more comical though are the people that believe it, and then want to blame others for making bad choices. It is chocolate spread...if you want to give it your kids as a treat sometimes do it. It is in my pantry and it is a great occasional treat. If Hershey's told consumers to put a chocolate bar on toast and they did, and then sued it would be just as ridiculous.

What in the world? As if it we can' tell it's all chocolate goodness and loaded with sugar??

Doh. That's why it tastes so good and kids love it.

COME ON, people. You're all embarrassing me.

I'm now thinking of all of the companies I should sue.

First up: The Girl Scouts because those damn "Thin Mints" don't actually help you lose weight.

Someone sued Nutella?! The nerve! I prefer it straight out of the jar, too. LOL: "what chocolate fairy unicorn island do these people live on, where they thought that a chocolate spread was totally HEALTHY"

I agree 150 percent.
Nutella and McDonalds seem to take a lot of flack and I can't figure out why. Kraft, Kellogg's, General Mills -- all sorts of companies sell loads of crap. How about Kellogg's new Krave™ Double Chocolate cereal?
That's a healthy breakfast? Hmmm.
It's our responsibility as parents and consumers to fill our fridges and cupboards with healthy food. It's also up to us to teach and model moderation and healthy lifestyle habits.

Thanks for articulating what so many moms are thinking. : )

My uncle worked for A&P a long time ago and would bring us products before they were on the shelf. When he brought home Nutella, and all six of us thought it was disgusting, we were quite surprised to learn it was actually going to be sold in stores. Till this day, I still do not like Nutella.

It's so ridiculous what people will sue for!

What's wrong with frozen nuggets?

This lawsuit is representative of what's wrong with our system! Ridiculous....
That is so crazy. No one seems to be accountable for their own personal lives anymore. Crazy.

I guess I'll be the only voice of dissent. I think companies should absolutely be held accountable for false advertising. Yes, most people realize that Nutella is dessert and not a healthy breakfast. Newsflash. Lots of people aren't savvy and buy into advertising at face value, because they don't know any better. That's why there are rules and regulations about advertising. I get that Nutella worked their way around it by not outright saying it is healthy, but they very heavily imply it. And I think that's wrong.

This is not a question of whether you like or dislike Nutella (for the record, I frickin' love it). It's about being a responsible company. And they aren't doing that.

PS> Ali, Frozen chicken nuggets are bad because they take an entire chicken (face and all), squish it through a machine, bleach the crap out of it, add fillers, then remould it to look like "nuggets".

People are affin nuts and will do anything for a dollar sometimes!

BTW i may or may not have eaten half a jar of nutella yesterday ...LOL

I don't think I've ever tried Nutella, but anyone who would look at it and think that it's healthy doesn't deserve to win a lawsuit.

The absurdity of that I don't understand. While I get people getting sue happy over nothing how could they actually settle?? I love nutella. I've been eating it since I was little. But I don't eat a JAR of it a day. I have some on bread, or a waffle or a crepe. And its delicious.

Great post! I feed my kids nutella about once a week with fruit and whole grain bread. They love it. And you know what? I don't even try to pretend it's healthy. It's not. But it's an occasional food. Everything in moderation... not sure why people don't understand that.

I second Adam.

And, I love this. It's one of the many reasons I'm glad you're my friend.

LOL Oh I am so with you. How on earth can you sue over something so frivilous!
Ali said…
@Stephanie - I think the frozen chicken nuggets here in Canada (or just the ones I purchase) are a bit healthier, then. Ours are high in sodium, and that's a problem, but it's not so bad. Not ideal. But not as bad (I checked with my PT).

Good to know, though. Thanks!
