I just don't understand...

One of the great things about having children is being able to watch cartoons again. I'm not talking about shows that should have never been on the air, like Barney and TeleTubbies. I'm talking about shows like Bugs Bunny and Sesame Street. Shows that make me laugh a little (Besides Eric Cartman, Bugs Bunny is the coolest cartoon character ever!)

I also like watching shows that teach my children a thing or two - like The Electric Company, How It's Made, and Mighty Machines. (I can tell you with absolute certainty the difference between a backhoe and a front loader.) And my 4 year old's current favourite show - Man vs. Wild. I'm not so into that show, to be honest with you, but I'm a girl, and well, I don't like the idea of eating larvae from a tree.

Anyway. Some shows, my children never got into. And with good reason, I think! Shows like Yo Gabba Gabba. (There's a party in my tummy... so yummy, so yummy!) Now, I know many children love this show, but to me, it is kind of... creepy.

DJ Lance and the freaky monsers - Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee and Plex. (What?) The trippy music! And the psychadelic colours. It's like Woodstock for children.

From Wikipedia: "Although “Yo Gabba Gabba!” was created as a show for young children, it has slowly become a sensation among college students and even some parents who are entertained by its retro/indie style, bright colors, simplicity, and entertaining music from many of the popular bands featured on the show."

The most disturbing dude on this show?

This guy:

I mean... come on. What do you think when you see him? It's not just me, right? Right?

I can handle The Backyardigans. I used to love Blue's Clues. I like Mr. Maker and even though Ruby annoys me, I don't mind watching Max and Ruby. If Dora is on mute, I'm okay with her, too. But Yo Gabba Gabba is just a big mess of a show for me.

I just don't understand it! Do you?

Totally creeps me out too. My son isn't yet able to request his faves, so I keep this one out of our schedule. If I'm lucky, he'll never see it!

LOL oh my goodness that picture was classic!! Very fun post and I agree many of the cartoons are very creepy!! I loved the baby einstein videos but I had kids 10 years ago and it's CRAZY how much new stuff comes out every day!! Baby can read at 8months old--WOW were my boys cheated!! LOL They still watch cartoons now and I love it they seem so grown up setting the DVR for "their" show (Star wars and such). They love the animal planet but there are some show there not fit for kids!! (Killer Sharks, Worst Human Attacks--I mean scary!!) Television can be fun but we have to stay on top of what our children are watching!! Great post!

I agree! I find them deeply disturbing, especially now that they star in a car commercial which shows them sneaking out at night and partying on the town.

Ha - this post cracked me up. I don't have children yet, so I can't really relate, but I know there are some strange shows out there (Yo Gabba Gabba included).

And yes... that character is definitely disturbing. It's not just you!!!

Oh, and thanks for stopping by my blog today :)

That character is just gross! At our house it is all about Curious George and Caillou. Niko is also starting to like Super Why and Word World. It is so much fun to watch cartoons! Oh Yeah - we watched a couple of episodes of Tom and Jerry and Niko almost fell off the couch laughing! I wonder what makes them like one cartoon over the other?
Yo Gabba Gabba drives me nuts too. Thank goodness Reagan only had a very short phase that she enjoyed watching them. And the deal with college students watching... I have often said that maybe if I were high or stoned I would actually enjoy that show!
I am pretty much glad right now that we don't have a tv, so I cant watch this stuff! Creeps!

Oh, I do *not care for Yo Gabba Gabba. I have me a serious crush on Bear Grylls, though :)
I just posted a tweet about him the other day, and what he looks like!
My youngest is obsessed with the show. As much as I want to think it's weird and kooky, she now extends her hand and says, "Nice to meet you' as they sing on the show, and just enjoys herself to no end dancing with DJ. Lance. Weird...yes. Addicting for kids? Big yes!

It doesn't bug me..before my 1 yo watched it and danced wildly I was there with you..I thought it must be European or something ;) I'm w/ you in general though, most of them make me want to slit my wrist! Ruby & Max is one that I don't get at all. Why does that kid only speak in one word sentences..repeat..repeat, AHH! And where the hell is the Mom??
Oh and thanks for getting there's a party in my tummy stuck in my head!
Ha ha! I see it too. I've actually wanted to try watching that show – my kid is kind of a music freak, and I've heard good things about it. But we usually stick to PBS on the rare occasions that we watch TV. I'm more familiar with Dinosaur Train and Word World (such a cute show!).

We LOVE LOVE Yo Gabba Gabba around here! If I even say the words, my daughter gets super excited. We have a blast watching it. We dance and sing and honestly, it's about a million times more entertaining/fun than any other show on kid's television right now.

I'm so glad that my kids outgrew the preschool kid shows right as this one came on the air! It scares me. Sadly, my kids were never into Sesame Street, and I have always loved it. Now it's iCarly and Sponge Bob at our house.

Visiting from Mama Kat's!

LOL! I know exactly what you are talking about with Muno! I said it to my husband and now he can't watch the show.

I'm glad my kids don't like Yo Gaba Gaba either. It is truly awful - hardly the stuff good childhood tv show memories are made of!

Thank-you! I actually have a bunch of adult friends who love Yo Gabba Gabba and watch it all the time with their kids. I don't get it! The show is annoying and kinda creepy, too.

We love the Backyardigans and Dinosaur Train around here.

My kids seem to enjoy Yo Gabba Gabba, but it's not their favourite. Mr Maker beats them all. However I find Yo Gabba Gabba really bizarre and creepy!

We recently discovered the retro toon channel and my kids are hooked on all the classics I grew up with! YAY!

And yes, it's not just you!

No, it's not just you. He looks like a d*ldo.

Despite that, I actually do like the show. I love the bands and I think the cartoons are creative and interesting. It teaches good lessons in an entertaining way. It's super trippy, but in a fun way. It's definitely not for everybody, though.

I skip the t.v. and just use videos. My son's favorite is Winnie the Pooh.

LOL Yo Gabba Gabba does freak me out. Especially Moono. But, my middle son had a really hard time communicating for a long time, except through song. So, it was actually a very big help. :)

Thanks for visiting me on my SITS day last Monday!

What?? You no like the "one-eyed" monster? HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist!! I don't get that show either. My boys know that we can't watch it in this house!

My kids don't like Yo Gabba Gabba, so there isn't an issue there.

The only thing that I do ilke about it is their musical guests- I def think that is cool. I was in Trader Joes the other day, talking with the college age checkers about the episode with the Roots on it- of course they didn't have kids. It was pretty funny.

Love Blues Clues, and Sesame Street :)

And also? Worse than all of these is Tom and Jerry. I MEAN SERIOUSLY.

That thing looks like a deranged dildo.

I absolutely outlawed Teletubbies when Jake was little, mostly because I couldn't handle having that show on. Drove me INSANE. But then so did Elmo's voice.

Probably why my kid developed a thing for Bob Villa and Martha Stewart...we were too mean to let him watch many kid's shows (snort!)
