A Moment Of Relief With La Roche-Posay (Plus A Giveaway)

I hate to say it—but... I'm so busy. The last couple of months have been busier than usual, and there is no end in sight, especially since the holiday season is here. I know—we all lead busy lives—but even though we're juggling a hundred things a day while trying to find some sort of balance that works for us, it's essential to take care of ourselves, too.

I work full-time, run a business I love, and take care of my family, which in itself is a full-time job that never ends—and the most rewarding job of all. From housework to preparing meals to after-school activities and keeping up my social life (that's important, too!) I always make sure I'm taking some time for myself. Weekly visits to the hair salon? Check. Staying active and working out? Check. Taking vacations whenever we can? Check. A great skin-care routine? Check.

By the end of the day, I'm ready for a moment of relief, and that usually comes after the children have gone to bed. Late at night, I can finally relax, unwind, and start thinking about all the things I have to do the following day. One of my favourite night time routines is washing off the days' make-up and applying moisturizer. As a beauty product junkie, I'm always trying out new products, and I have been loving the new Toleriane Ultra Overnight cream by La Roche-Posay

Share your #MomentOfRelief and you could win a Toleriane Ultra Overnight skin care package!

This moisturizer is perfect and soothing, and as soon as you apply it to your face, you'll feel it working right away, especially if you have sensitive skin. Halloween Safety Tips (And A Duracell Giveaway)

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, it's time to start thinking about the holiday season and all things festive—but first, Halloween! I get so excited for Halloween, and not just because I'm a mom. I love figuring out what costume to wear (I'm Harley Quinn this year!) and I love seeing what my boys are going to dress up as, too. (This year, they're going as a hot dog and a banana. Totally their idea).

I get nervous on Halloween, especially because my boys are getting older and wanting more independence. They'd be happy to walk the streets on Halloween night with friends and leave me behind to pass out candy at home. I've seen one too many Halloween movies to let them go out alone on the 31st, though.

With all the excitement that comes with Halloween, it's important to remember to be safe, especially since so many children are walking the streets at night, sometimes without parental supervision. Along with (very large) bags to store all the Halloween candy the kids receive as they go trick-or-treating, I always make sure we've got flashlights with us—with Duracell Coppertop Batteries inside to ensure the flashlights last for hours.

This Halloween, Duracell and the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) are reminding us all to stay safe.

Here are some tips on staying safe on Halloween:

Keep The Décor Safe: Carving pumpkins is a lovely tradition for most families, (so is roasting pumpkin seeds!) but to keep it safe, instead of placing lit candles inside the jack-o-lantern, use a flashlight or small battery operated candle instead. This is great because Duracell Coppertop Batteries will keep your pumpkins powered and lit all night long—even if it's a windy night.

Don't Blow It: Don't you love walking by homes that go all out with their Halloween decorations? Some homes are so spooky, we almost want to avoid them! If you're planning on turning your home into a haunted house this Halloween, don't go overboard. Overloading extension cords and breakers is actually a fire hazard and will ruin the night for you—and the trick-or-treaters. Be mindful of the decorations you're using, and try to stick to battery-powered decorations instead.

Costume Considerations: By Halloween night, it's usually cool enough that we wear a sweater or jacket over our costumes. Whether we're covered up to stay warm or not, all trick-or-treaters should consider wearing bright coloured costumes that can be seen by motorists. Add reflective tape to costumes, too, to increase visibility in the dark.

Light The Way: I already mentioned that we never leave home without our trusty flashlights with Duracell Coppertone Batteries inside, because I would hate to be stuck on some dark and spooky road without extra light to guide our way back home. Carrying flashlights is a great way to stay visible to motorists and other people on the streets. Also important: stay in well-lit areas. I don't know about you, but Halloween is scary enough.

Stick With A Party: As much as my boys want to go out alone, I'm going to be walking behind them, whether they like it or not, for my peace of mind, and for their safety. They'll also go out with a group of friends like they do every year, which makes it more fun for everyone, and safer.

Know Your Route: There is always a couple of homes that are famous for giving out the best treats on Halloween, and it's tempting to go around collecting as much candy as possible—but make sure you stick to a well-known routine in your neighbourhood.

Check Candy: Before the kids bite into anything, make sure you check to make sure what they've received is safe. It's also advised that you taste your favourite treats, too, and take whatever you like best after the kids have gone to bed.  After all, you worked hard for it, too!

To ensure you have a happy and safe Halloween, I'm giving away a great prize pack from Duracell! This giveaway includes Duracell Quantum batteries, a Coleman flashlight, and wearable reflectors to make sure your entire family stays safe and has fun this Halloween.

To enter to win, leave me a comment telling me what you're dressing up as this Halloween (or if you're the lucky one staying home to give out the candy!)

I'll pick a winner randomly and contact that person on October 17th, 2016. (So remember to leave your email address in your comment).

Bonus entry number one: Follow Duracell on Twitter and tell me in a separate comment.

Bonus entry number two: Follow me on Twitter and Instagram and tell me in a (third) separate comment.

Good Luck—and Happy Halloween!

Shedding Light On National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, but bullying—and cyber-bulling—are problems children face every day, every month. The best way to help children and teens is by raising awareness and helping those who need it most. I wanted to talk about this issue because I have children in grade 3 and grade 6, and although they haven't faced any serious issues, I see that not all children are as kind as they should be when I'm volunteering at the school. I asked Ottawa's Stuntman Stu some questions about this issue, because he and the team at Majic 100 started the No More Bullies campaign—which has received great feedback from schools, the youth, parents, and the community. Although the program is currently on hold, there are ways we can still promote kindness and remind children and teenagers the importance of being kind—to everyone.

How did you come up with the No More Bullies campaign? What has the feedback been like so far?

The campaign started by accident. Back in September 2011 there was a bullying story in the newspaper and we talked about it on MAJIC 100. I was shocked that this stuff still existed and told my own story of being bullied in high school. We spent all morning taking calls from frustrated parents and students and after the show I tweeted that If I have to visit every school to promote anti bullying, I would. Needless to say, after a few hundred re-tweets the idea was born.

Although you're not currently touring schools in the Ottawa region, what are some important messages you deliver to students who are being bullied, and how can they get the help they need?

First off, tell the teacher and if the problem continues (which is usually does) then ask to speak with the principal. It’s their job to asses the situation and find a solution. Sometimes that’s not always the easiest but you have to respect the process that the schools must follow. When I was growing up we were taught to just fight back and knock out the bully. I don’t want my kids, or any kids doing that, because it’s not the answer. Some people have been critical of my stance on that, but knocking another kid out doesn’t get you any closer to a solution. The bully needs to understand what they’re doing is wrong and the effect he or she is having on the victim.

What are some tips you give to students and children who are being bullied?

First off, you’re being unfairly targeted and a bully likes to pick on someone for a variety of reasons. I’ve seen too many kids think it’s their fault for being picked on. You must tell someone, because if nobody knows they problem is going on then they can’t help you.

I know I went through a period in middle school where I bullied... at the time, it seems like an impossibly hard place to be. What do you tell a child who feels overwhelmed at school, and doesn't know where to go for help?

There’s always someone who’s able to help. Kids Help Phone, the Distress Centre, YouthNet at CHEO, so many resources that are a click and phone call away. Parents, siblings and school officials are always there as well.

Do you address the people who are doing the bullying? What do you say to someone (or in general) if they are doing the bullying?

I would sit them down with the person they’re picking on and explain the situation to them. Many times they don’t realize the damage their causing or scars they’ve left.

Bullying starts from a very young age, with children picking on other children, whether it's about their weight, appearance, or just because they look different. I tell my children to always treat others the way they want to be treated, and to never make anyone feel excluded. If they see someone sitting alone, to go talk to them. What is the advice you give to your children?

I give my kids the same advice. We’re all different and we don’t make fun of someone for any reason. My kids are online now and I’ve explained that most times sadly, comments are nasty and they should never read into them and I don’t want to see them being negative on any site.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with me, Stu. It's great to have you and the station show your support to the community with the No More Bullies campaigns, and it's always a good time to sit down with our children to discuss these important issues. Nothing is easier than being kind.

Shopping Designer Shades Is Easy With SmartBuyGlasses

I am a collector of fine things, especially designer handbags and sunglasses. Women (and men) can never have too many pairs of gorgeous shades to wear, because sunglasses are the perfect accessory to any outfit. I easily justify the cost of new sunglasses by wearing them every day—no matter the season.

I've had the pleasure of partnering with SmartBuyGlasses several times and received some gorgeous shades to review from their site. I'm always so impressed with the quality of the shades I receive, since SmartBuyGlasses sells a variety of designer shades from Gucci to Ray-Ban to Tom Ford and Fendi. (And Burberry, Dior, Persol, Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss, Prada and so many more).

SmartBuyGlasses offers the largest selection of sunglasses, eyeglasses, and ski goggles online, with over 180 brands. The only hard part will be deciding which pair of glasses to go with—I can spend hours browsing through the sunglasses and deciding on which pair to go with. And each time, I tell myself to go with something a little different, but I just can't—I always stick to the classic style, with  black frames.

My recent pair of Tom Ford shades were a huge hit, and I love wearing them. They're classy, stylish, and do a great job at protecting my eyes from the sun.

It is easy to navigate through the site, and there is a great selection of prescription glasses at great prices, too. One thing I love about SmartBuyGlasses is how they provide comprehensive information on all the products they're selling, to help you make the right decision.

You'll get information on the product and lenses and the fine details like the dimensions, and what the glasses are made of. I love that there are several images of each pair of sunglasses, so you can get a look at the pair you love from every angle.

"We pride ourselves in offering our customers great deals daily and guarantee an enjoyable shoping experience, with 100 day returns and a price match guarantees."

SmartBuyGlasses is part of the SmartBuyGlasses Optical Group, one of the world's leading online designer eyewear retailers with operations in Canada, USA, and Italy.

How To Stay Healthy During The Fall Spike Season

The school year is in full swing, and we're already nearing the end of October. There is so much to look forward to now that it's fall, except for colder weather and "germ" season.

That's right... it seems like as soon as the kids are back to school, they get sick with a cold or the flu. And of course, cold and flu prevention is important year-round, but it's even more important to make healthy choices and take preventative measures to protect yourself and your family in preparation for the "Fall Spike"— the increase in sickness, which ranges from colds to severe asthma flare-ups, that's associated with children going to back school and the upcoming flu season.

I'm thrilled to be working with Loblaw as part of the #LoblawFluCrew to spread the important message (not germs!) on how we can keep our families healthy this season.

Studies show that school children bring germs home from school and spread them to us lucky parents and even to their younger siblings, causing sicknesses ranging from the common cold to severe asthma flare-ups. Oh, the joys of the fall spike.

Here's how you can keep yourself—and your family—healthy this season:
  • Stock up on healthy foods. When you're grocery shopping, look for foods that contain vitamin C and E, which contribute to good overall immune health. (These vitamins contain antioxidants that are important for the maintenance of good health and can be found in citrus fruits, seeds, and nuts).
  • Increase your zinc intake. You can increase your zinc by eating more potatoes and butternut squash to help maintain proper immune function.
  • Eat your protein. Whether you're getting it from beans, meat, eggs, seafood, legumes, nuts, or milk products, protein will help build and repair body tissues and antibodies to help you stay healthy and strong.
  • Keep it green. B vitamins, found in leafy greens, will also help you maintain good health, so eat your salad. (B vitamins are also found in whole grains, too).
  • Probiotic food. Probiotic foods like yogurt contain probiotic bacteria that can modulate immune function. Eating foods that contain probiotic is better than taking probiotic supplements because you'll also be getting the other nutrients in the food, as well, like protein and calcium.
If you'd like to find out more about eating healthy and what you should be shopping for, make sure to consult with your free Loblaw in-store dietitian. They are a wealth of knowledge and can help you prepare for the cold and flu season by suggesting which nutrient-rich foods you should be stocking up on.

They'll even give you handy recipes to make meal preparation easier for you. (Like this sweet potato and carrot miso soup recipe, or the sweet potato nacho bake—both so delicious and perfect for fall!)

And while you're at local Loblaw store, you can visit your in-store pharmacist for your free flu shot, too, which is the best way to prevent the flu for the entire family.

From the food aisle to the pharmacy, your local Loblaw store has great products to help you stay healthy during cold and flu season.

The Hottest Fall Boot Trends

The thing I love most about fall isn't the gorgeous, changing colours on the trees or the fact that there is a cool breeze in the air every morning—for me, it's all about the boots. And, oh, the boots this season! There is something for everyone, and it is so easy to pull off a stylish look with the right pair of boots no matter the occasion.

The must have boots this season? Well, there are a few, from the lace-up boot, to the ankle booties, and of course, the wedge heel—not just to be worn in the summertime. What's most important to me is comfort and style, and I found some great boots from some of my favourite stores that are both stylish, on-trend, and comfortable. Trust me, you need comfort when you're working all day long and keeping up with the kids before and after school!

I was on CTV Ottawa Morning Live today talking about what's hot in boots for fall, and I showed some of my favourite looks from ECCO, Geox, Aldo, and Le Chateau.

Here's what I'm loving right now:

These classic biker booties are so fun, and can be worn with your favourite jeans or dress and tights. Best part? You can wear them all day long and still be comfortable.

I am also loving these beige ankle booties from ECCO with a stacked heel. Comfort, class, and style all in one pair of boots. And when you're shopping for boots, think about longevity; if you're spending a lot of money, you know it's going to last you a long time. Quality is key.

For something fun and fun, try the boots with fringe. Fringe detailing on boots are SO in right now. Ad how cute are these?

Geox is another store I love shopping for shoes and boots—not only for me, but for my children, too.
These boots are elegant and classy, and you don't have to sacrifice style, either, because you'll be rocking the stacked heel. I love the chestnut colour and the suede (with a side zip!) on these boots.

Sometimes, finding the perfect pair of knee-high boots can be difficult, but I found my new favourite pair at Geox. These black suede boots with stretchy elastic are so easy to take from day to night. I love the heels and the rounded toe, and they're amazingly comfortable, too, thanks to the platform heel and memory foam upper.

Le Chateau

You can find great boots at all price points this season. I love the look of these boots from Le Chateau—perfect for a night out on the town with a cute little black dress and tights. These pointy toe ankle boots get a "Victorian-inspired" update with corset-like laces and a folded cuff. Totally sexy, too.

How about adding a touch of colour to you boots this fall? I don't often stray from classic black or beige, but these wine coloured boots are calling my name. I love the straps that wrap around the boot, –totally chic and stylish for fall. And this is a great way to incorporate some colour into your otherwise only-black wardrobe.

Aldo has been my go-to store for years to find the perfect pair of heels, but it's also an amazing store to shop at for accessories and boots. With so many boots to choose from, deciding on one pair is next to impossible.

Now that you're out of your comfort zone when it comes to boots with colour, get a little more daring and go red. These boots are on sale, so you can buy them and not feel bad about wearing them only a few times.

If you love a higher heel, these boots are great, because they're perfect to wear with skinny jeans, and the stacked heel means you can wear them all day long.

What boots are you loving for fall? From the stacked heel to the ankle bootie, there truly is something amazing for everyone right now.

Thank you to ECCO, Geox, Le Chateau and Aldo for collaborating with me on this! I'm loving all the great styles of boots this season.

Happy shopping!

Fall Fashion For Less

Fall is officially here, and as much as I already miss summer, I am so excited for all the wonderful things that come with fall—especially shopping for new clothes like sweaters, leggings, and boots. Dressing for fall is the best, because there are so many different ways you can style your outfits, like layering tanks and tees with cute knits, wearing leggings with big cozy sweaters, and rocking a cute dress with tights and boots.

I love finding new pieces I can wear to work, to parties, and when I'm out on the town with friends on weekends. The truth is, I had never thought about shopping at Walmart for clothes, but I kept hearing about how great Walmart's private apparel line, George, is—great pieces at ridiculously affordable prices. Being the shopaholic that I am, I decided to venture into the clothing section at Walmart, and I was totally surprised by the great pieces I found for fall. I left with three entire outfits—including jewellery—for just under $100. I can't think of any other store I frequently shop at that where I spend so little on so much.

My favourite new look from George is the pair of black leggings I found that are absolute perfection in every way—they are stylish, comfortable, and can be paired with some great sweaters, which I found at Walmart, too, like this beige George curved hem poncho.

Another fab find I found at Walmart? This gorgeous leopard print dress. I wear it with black tights and my favourite ankle booties. If it's cold out, I just add a cozy knit sweater. It's so cute with the necklace I found, too. (The necklace, by the way? Only six dollars... yes, you read that right!)

Walmart knows just what's on trend this season, and has done a fabulous job of having a variety of classic jewel tones in their selection of knits that are perfect to help you build your fall wardrobe at great prices. Love to layer it up like I do? With the endless selection of George fall apparel, you can take your favourite jeans, long-sleeved tee, and add a knit sweater on top for a cute look.

Fashion for less means I can shop more... and leaving with bags full of clothes that are stylish and trendy makes me very happy. So make sure you check out Walmart for some great #FallLooksForless with #George!
