Giving him the moon and stars...

I wrote a birthday post about my son turning four years old, and I wrote about his very fun birthday party, but I forgot to write about the only thing he asked for from us - a telescope! My little four year old is obsessed with the solar system - the planets, the moon, the galaxy... it fascinates him. So when he said he wanted a telescope for his birthday, we delivered!

He enjoys it so much - as do I! We've had quite a few cloudy nights, but on the clear nighs, we have seen the moon beautifully, as well as Jupiter. Yes, Jupiter! It's beyond cool.

But I'm wondering if it is cause for concernt yet? I mean, the last thing I want to be doing is raising my child to love space so much he actually wants to be an astronaut! I just could not handle that, you know. I have anxiety attacks over the thought of him going to another city for University - let alone moving out of our house if his new home is not on the same street as mine.

Just how would I handle my little boy travelling to space? Millions of miles away from me? I don't mind if he works for NASA, but from here on Earth, thank you very much. (And would that mean he'd have to live in Florida? Hmm... maybe not such a bad idea, after all...) Space travel is too scary for me.

Seriously, though - don't you get in those moods when you are looking at the stars and you start to question everything? And how really tiny and insignificant we are in comparison to the entire, vast, universe? Does it not blow your mind when you start thinking about space? It spooks me out!

I feel exactly the same way. Both of my boys talk regularly about being an astronaut. But, then again, they also talk about being Army men (Oh NO!), cowboys, and trash men (uhhh...can you think of something else?). Here's to hoping that our boys think up some safe ( and profitable) career choices!
Check out my blog...You have an award waiting for you. :)

Hi! First-time commenter. I like your blog!

I TOTALLY agree...we are just little specks in this huge, vast world. It totally is mind-blowing.
What an awesome gift! And you crack me up with how your mind automatically goes to how you will survive without him if he is living on the moon!

That's a cool gift. Mr. Weasel has always wanted to get one for the Weasels, but he would buy a nice one and they would break it within a week.

Jake would have been in heaven with a gift like that-he's a real science nut. :)

Ah, don't worry...you'll be ready for each stage when you get there.

Both my kids love the stars and the moon and they even have a telescope to take it all in. I don't think they get just how small earth is, in the grand scheme of things..but I get it and yes it freaks me out just a little. We are a spec in the galaxy and even more so in the universe...the great unknown. I am a christian but often think there just has to be something "more" out there.
(BTW..my oldest has said so far that he wants to be an astranaut, a dentist and now his latest...a professional dancer..I think I like the astronaut thing more and more!) :)

What an amazing gift! I would have died for a telescope as a kid.

I just gave you a blog award!

Yes, I totally get in those moods. And I think it's awesome that he's into astronomy at such a young age. Florida, or Texas right? Both have space centers! Both would have much milder winters than what you're used to up in Canada, for sure!
Great gift - although I wouldn't worry about him becoming an astronaut just yet. There are so many other things to worry about in the meantime!!! Take it day by day or your head may explode.

Looking up at space does make me feel very tiny and insignificant! That's such a cool gift you got him. But look, don't worry too much about him wanting to go to the moon. Look at it this way - if he becomes a famous astronaut, he'll be wealthy enough to by his Mom a mansion attached to his own!

It's amazing how kids open new areas within us. Happy, happy birthday to him. What a fantastic gift!
First, let me say "happy birthday". I must have missed all these great birthday posts. I love reading all about his day, his day 4 years ago and your thoughts. Thanks for sharing. What a fantastic gift!!
We have been talking a lot about space and astronauts. A lot!! I tell Cash a story every night and it generally relates to something is is interested in. Lately, we have been taking many trips to space and doing many cool things while we are there.
Fun! Fun!
That is an amazing telescope!!!! What a lucky boy!

You make me laugh -- so funny that his love of space makes you worry about an astronaut career! But at the same time, I totally get what you're saying. My boy asked me about a song lyric the other day, where Bono sings about 'letting go'. I told him "He's talking about letting people go to do other things in their lives. Like someday I'm going to have to let you go to have a family and kids of your own." Just saying that made me tear up on the spot.

If only we could push the 'pause' button on their childhoods...

when I think about the vastness it makes me weirdly calm. Sometimes not knowing is nice because it's hard to worry about things we don't know are there.

Oh that is just so sweet. I am sure he will love it and grow out of wanting to be an astronaut and if he doesn't then take comfort in the fact that there are really very few astronauts in the world. So if he made it, he would be the best of the best.

No worries, he can go with lil boo and I, you trust us right??? *smirk* I already promised lil boo a trip to the moon....guess I better start figuring out how to fulfill that request.

That is great he is fascinated with the solar system!

Cheers!

If I really think about it, yes it does blow my mind. I think it's cool that your little guy is so into something like that though and I'm glad you are fostering his lvoe for it, even if you don't want him to go to space someday... ; )
